Travel Photography Tips

Travel photography is a great way to take excellent shots and enrich your photo album. If you are starting to learn photography, traveling is also great for practicing your skills. Following are some tips for taking excellent shots on a trip, whether you are an amateur or advanced photographer. These tips are for those who use digital cameras.

Digital cameras allow you to take numerous shots and store them on a memory card or other digital data storage devices. The number of shots is limited only by the capacity of your data storage device. So, the first tip is – stock up on your storage. Get an additional memory card or CD/DVD/flash drive if you take a laptop with you. Around 20-30GB of digital storage should be enough for any trip.

Having a laptop is great, as you can move the images onto it (you’ll need less storage), as well as be able to review them. Having a backpack is also useful – you can place your equipment inside to protect it from bad weather and damage. What equipment should you take with you? Try to take only the most necessary items, especially if you are going on a long walking journey. Replacement batteries can be great for any trip. If you travel on water, you may want to pack your equipment in a waterproof bag.

On a trip, you can shoot local landscapes, architecture, and people. If you go on a trip to a popular tourist destination, the locals are likely to be “picture-friendly”. However, it may be best to ask their permission, since some people may not want to be in the frame. Local festivals and celebrations can grant wonderful shots, and nobody minds photographers at such events. In most cases, it is best to take close-ups of objects and people (less than 3 meters away), so make sure to come closer if possible.

If you are shooting a landscape, take a few shots from different angles and with different settings, to ensure that a few of them turn out well. Pay attention to the weather and light – rain or snow, sunny or dim, dusk or dawn, anything can spoil a shot. So, try to take many shots from different angles and with varied camera settings. The built-in flash of your camera can help you in many situations, especially when you shoot indoors or in low light. You can also use flash in bright sunlight, to reduce the harsh shadows.

If you want to have your friends in the picture, try to compose the best scene. Try to avoid the usual pattern, when a person stands and looks straight in the lens. Use your imagination, and you will take unique shots. You can even try to learn photography at home before you test your skills on vacation.

On a trip, try not to spare the time and effort to capture a good image, as well as do your best not to miss a good shot. The beautiful pictures will be your reward when you return home. Hunting for great shots is likely to make your travel even more of an adventure.
