2008 Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes

2008 Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes

The Pilgrimage to Davaye

We’ve known the Corsins for almost 20 years and like the 2,000 Europeans we have made a special trip to Davaye almost every other year just to taste the new vintage 2008 Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes — and of course to travel back in olfactory time. We buy every time we go, have done so for years, well before anyone was selling wine on the Internet. Still, we’ve never been able to get a bottle for WineAccess. This time, we lucked out.

The 2008 Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes vintage was extraordinary in Macon, and even more so chez Corsin. The growing season that saw so much rain in April, turned on a dime in September when it matters most. Those blues skies and cool temperatures allowed Jean-Jacques to wait out the Chardonnay, harvesting some of the most sturdy, finely structured fruit since — yup, you got it — 1978.

Gilles’ savvy in the cellar is legend in Macon. But in 2008, like that vintage 30 years before, he put out a Chardonnay that will outlive most Meursault. The old-vine St. Veran from 1978 was a gem — rich, but tightly wound, it slowly opened after two hours in the glass. This Chardonnay isn’t about the obvious; it’s all about the virtue of patience. After a couple hours, the fine, sturdy muscle of the Chardonnay starts to let go, showing off the green apple core, and yes, the kiss of honey. If you know these wines as we’ve come to know them, that core argues for a decade (or two) in a cool cellar.

Yes, the Corsins earmarked some of the sensational 2008 Saint Veran “Vieilles Vignes” for WineAccess members. But, don’t get too excited. They didn’t ship much (via refrigerated container, door-to-door). Just 100 cases — sorry in advance. Shipping included on 6. Not to be missed.
