The Long Hours of an Auto Mechanic
As an auto mechanic, I work on various types of cars. They can be domestic or import, it makes no difference to me. I think that over the years I have developed an excellent and useful skill. My problem is that everyone wants my help all of the time. After a 12 hour day at my shop, six days a week, the last thing I feel like doing is working on someone’s car.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy helping people, but too often it becomes a habit. Friends and family are constantly asking for help and advice with their cars. I have a neighbor who must sit at the window of his home watching for me to come home from work. He has a 1995 Hyundai that is probably not worth anything today, but he is always having some problem with it, especially in the cold winter months. At least a few times a month he pops out of his house the instant I drive into my driveway, asking me to look at something.
I have a large family and someone always wants me to go with them to look at a car that they want to buy. I have politely hinted many times that I work many hours each day and am rather tired. But that doesn’t get me off the hook, they’ll just say “Ok we will make it tomorrow night instead”.
I guess I am just blowing off some steam; it’s just that this has been going on for a long time now. Anyway, helping family and friends is the right thing to do, as long as there is some type of limit to it.
As an auto mechanic, I have always made a decent living. I was able to buy a house on my own and support a family (spouse and 2 children), and actually I enjoy the work. Even in this economy I’ve been fortunate enough to escape unscathed and keep the money coming in for my family.
I was talking to my mother yesterday about the economic situation and how lucky I am to have a job. She said that while a great portion of the country is out of work, she is proud of me for all my hard work in supporting my family, and all that I have achieved on my own. To qualify for one of these positions, you need to have good typing skills and have to have some special equipment (such as software and a foot pedal) to make transcribing on your computer a bit easier. Most other jobs for stay at home moms involve selling, which is not my strong suit at all. You need to play up your technical prowess, your organizing skills and the accomplishments in your past that play up your ability to speak to the tech heads and the customers. If you put in a generic cover letter that says something not entirely applicable – like how great you were at being an assembly line foreman at a previous job, you must make no more than a mention of it. The idea also is to play up your assets, without laboring the point. As far as possible, try to describe your aptness for the job by putting in specifics. That way, you make your point and yet don’t tend to sound so cocky. If instead of explaining how your customer service organizing skills have resulted in a 98% satisfaction vote for customers at your previous job, you just say that you have magical people skills, that might not look so good.

20 Questions Game: A Family Affair
When we were growing up, one of the things we would do at family outings and special
occasions was play the 20 questions game, in which one person says they are thinking of
a person, place or thing, and then everybody else tries to guess what it is.
The main rule to the game is that every question can only be answered by “yes” or “no,”
and in the version we played, the people who were guessing were allowed one hint. Hours
would go by, and we would hardly realize it because it was so much fun.
The object of the game for the person who chooses the person, place or thing is to try
to think of something so obscure that nobody could ever guess what it is. One of
the more memorable moments in the 20 questions game for our family came when my sister,
who was about four years old at the time and did not quite grasp the concept of the game,
said, “I’m thinking of a box.”
We all had a good laugh at that one, and the general idea was just to have fun with the game.
What I soon discovered was that it is a game that you can play at practically any age level
and is something that has carried over to my own family today.
Whenever we have down time at an airport or during the holiday season, for instance, my son
will usually start the 20 questions game off by saying, “I’m thinking of a person.”
We can usually figure out pretty easily who he is thinking about, because it is usually
someone we’ve just been discussing or a person who’s picture is up on the wall in the area
we are all sitting. After he starts it, however, we all chime in with our own person,
place or thing and can keep it going for hours.
I think one of the things that makes it such an enjoyable pastime is that everyone in the
family can feel like they are really contributing something. My wife and I are always
very encouraging to our children with the choices they make, and I can always see a
little sense of pride in them when they have come up with a good answer that has taken
several guesses to figure out.
Even when we have family game nights, we often will stop and play the 20 questions game,
just because it is such a simple concept and is something that everybody enjoys doing.
Most of us think about meals or recreation time as a great opportunity for us to bond
with our children, but playing the 20 questions game can provide the same opportunity
and is something that I will try to pass down to the next generation in my family.

in the middle of the night but they are not yet staying in
their own room, or if you are away and baby is sleeping in
